Sherlock Holmes

Director: Arthur Berthelet • US

Lost for nearly a century, this 1916 silent version of the legendary sleuth filmed at Chicago’s own Essanay Studios miraculously emerged last year from a French cinema archive. The newly restored film preserves the vision of star and screenwriter William Gillette, who adapted his own mega-popular stage play for the screen. Incorporating elements of Holmes’s most famous stories, with a new original score, this screening will be more than elementary.
