Director: Eva Neymann • Ukraine
With legendary Yiddish folklorist Sholem Alecheim as source material, Eva Neymann’s third feature tells of young love in a Ukrainian shtetl. We follow Hasidic lad Shimek from his birth to devout, restrictive parents; through adolescence and his games of make-believe with neighbor girl Buzya; and into young adulthood, when he must leave his village to pursue his dreams of becoming a doctor. This sweetly nostalgic song is poetic and dreamy.
